The Wayzata Symphony Orchestra is pleased to announce the appointment of Keehun Nam as its new Music Director, beginning with the 2025–26 season.
Nam currently serves as the Artistic Director of the Southeast Minnesota Youth Orchestras, where he conducts the top ensemble and sets the artistic vision for the season. Known for his energy, musical insight, and passion for community engagement, he brings a wealth of experience to the WSO.
A native Minnesotan, Nam grew up in Eden Prairie and credits his high school band director, Dr. Elizabeth Jackson, as a huge influence. “She demonstrated the power of music to help young people feel connected and valued,” Nam shared. “Dr. Jackson inspired me to start my college journey as a music education major. From there, I earned a master’s degree in conducting.”
Nam holds a Master’s degree in Orchestral Conducting from Ithaca College and a Bachelor’s degree in Musical Arts from Vanderbilt University. He has served in numerous leadership roles, including Interim Director of Orchestras at the University of Wisconsin–La Crosse, Musical Director of the Ithaca College Sinfonietta, and Principal Conductor of un/pitched, an ensemble dedicated to contemporary music. He has collaborated with distinguished soloists such as Jeremy Wilson, Peter Sheppard-Skærved, and Malcolm Bilson.
In 2023, Nam returned to Vanderbilt University to conduct the 10th anniversary concert of the Vanderbilt Commodore Orchestra he founded there in 2012. “The performance was special for many reasons,” Nam said. “Returning to see something I helped build still thriving, and conducting Swan Lake with more than 110 musicians on stage was unforgettable.” His guest conducting appearances span both North America and Europe, with performances in Berlin, St. Petersburg, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, and Bulgaria.
Reflecting on his new role, Nam said, “I am thrilled to be joining the Wayzata Symphony Orchestra as Music Director. Working with this talented group of musicians and performing for the community in my home state of Minnesota is a dream come true.”
The 2025-26 season kicks off on Sunday, October 5 at Hopkins High School, with Mr. Nam leading the orchestra in the music of Tchaikovsky, Prokofiev, and Rachmaninoff.
